Battery Park City prides itself in its long history of sustainability initiatives that have kept it at the forefront of urban sustainability. Buildings, open spaces, and parks at Battery Park City were designed and built with state-of-the-art methods and technologies for their time. In 2020, Battery Park City understands there is a new wave of sustainability leadership and initiatives to embark on.

3×3, in collaboration with a number of consultant partners, initiated stakeholder alignment, community engagement, and existing conditions assessments that shed light on what the future of Battery Park City could potentially look like to set the stage for the next ten years and lay the foundation for guiding documents geared toward a variety of stakeholders. Through both internal and external pop-ups and workshops, 3×3 engaged over 400 stakeholders of Battery Park City in order to capture ideas, test strategies, and build awareness and capacity for the implementation phase.

The feedback from the engagement funneled into three key documents. The first, the Sustainability Plan, sets a high-level vision for Battery Park City as well as Strategies and Actions as a pathway to achieve progressive sustainability targets. The second, the Green Guidelines, provides detailed guidance to building owners, managers, and tenants on the new requirements for sustainable buildings and site design. The last document is the Implementation Plan, which will outline the policies, programs, partnerships, and funding mechanisms that already exist, as well as those that need to be created, to turn this Sustainability Plan into a reality. 3×3 and the partner teams also produced a dissemination and communication plan outlining how the content will continue to live in a variety of mediums.
